Why Precision Medicine Is Changing Primary Care in Scottsdale

Date: October 1, 2026

Predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory medicine form the core of a precision healthcare approach.

Predictive medicine analyzes your genetics, lifestyle, and biomarkers to identify potential health risks before they surface.

Preventive medicine builds on those insights, focusing on early interventions, screenings, and lifestyle adjustments to stop health issues from developing.

Personalized medicine combines your unique genetic makeup, environment, and daily habits to build a care plan designed specifically for you.

Participatory medicine invites you to be an active partner in your health journey. Healthcare should not be a one-way street of doctors giving orders. Because what works for one person might not work for another, my goal is to provide tailored options and work alongside you to make changes that fit your life.

How precision medicine differs from traditional primary care

Traditional healthcare is largely built around a one-size-fits-all model. We rely on population-level data to create protocols and screening guidelines applied broadly, rather than starting at the individual level. The system is also highly reactive, often intervening only after symptoms appear or a formal diagnosis—like diabetes or kidney disease—is made.

In my view, one of the greatest limitations of traditional medicine is physician volume. Large patient panels leave doctors with too little time to take a deep history and truly understand each individual. Insurance constraints further compound this issue. Without an existing diagnosis or symptom, essential testing is rarely covered, preventing early investigation. For example, I check Vitamin D levels on every new patient because deficiencies impact overall health, yet insurance often refuses to pay for it without a qualifying diagnosis. To truly help patients thrive, we need to intervene early.

Precision medicine doesn’t have to be high tech.

A major misconception about precision medicine is that it must be high-tech to be effective.

While advanced testing has its place, personalized care can actually be quite simple. At its core, tailoring a plan requires time, knowing your patient, and understanding their goals. When appropriate, tools like genetic testing and advanced imaging can provide a clearer picture—but technology should always be carefully selected based on what the individual patient actually needs and wants.

Who can benefit from precision medicine?

Precision medicine is truly for everyone who wants to be proactive about their health and prevent future complications. My patients span a wide spectrum: for instance, a 35-year-old postpartum mom focused on fitness and nutrition benefits from this personalized approach just as much as an 80-year-old managing multiple chronic conditions. Their goals are completely different, but both deserve care tailored to their unique needs.

What preventative medicine looks like in practice

I believe in looking at the complete person to deliver the best possible care. Together, we will evaluate your family history, lifestyle, biomarkers, and personal goals. Our first visit is 90 minutes—which may sound long, but it is exactly what we need to thoroughly understand your health and begin building your personalized care plan.

Every patient is entirely unique. For example, a middle-aged woman experiencing fatigue, poor sleep, and has signs of osteoporosis, may benefit from bioidentical hormone replacement. Conversely, a similar aged female patient who weight trains and feels great may neither want nor need hormone replacement therapy.

Cancer screening is another area where this personalized approach is important. By looking at family history and utilizing modern genetic testing, we can proactively tailor your screenings. For instance, because my own maternal aunt had breast cancer in her 40s, I alternate between mammograms with ultrasound and MRIs every six months. This highly proactive approach keeps me safe—and it’s the exact same level of individualized, precision care I bring to you.

Traditional labs can miss early warning signs.

Someone can have “normal” lab results and still have early signs that their health may be moving in the wrong direction.

I always tell my patients, especially when I get their first set of labs, that these numbers are helpful, but we really want to be looking at the trends.  Trends tell me a lot. If you go a little deeper and look at how things are changing over time, you may uncover early warning signs that would otherwise be missed.

Diabetes is a good example. In traditional care, we commonly look at hemoglobin  A1C and fasting glucose. If you go a little deeper and check fasting insulin, which can help us evaluate insulin resistance and metabolic health, you may find that it’s elevated months to years before A1c or glucose become abnormal.

Another example is PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, which is a marker used in prostate cancer screening.  Classically, going above a certain threshold may trigger additional evaluation. But I don’t only want to know whether you crossed that threshold. I want to know what the trajectory looks like. If a patient’s PSA is still within the normal range but has been steadily rising, that’s something I want to pay attention to.

It’s about putting those pieces together and potentially noticing something before traditional testing or even a patient’s symptoms would have triggered a warning otherwise.

How preventative care can find what other testing missed.

I recently had a patient enroll in my concierge program who had previously undergone abdominal and pelvic imaging for a kidney stone. While reviewing the scans, we noticed some calcifications near his coronary arteries. Because he had also mentioned that his father suffered a massive heart attack at age 50, I decided to look deeper.

We ran advanced lipid panels and specific genetic cardiovascular markers. Based on those findings, I referred him to a specialist for further cardiac testing. His coronary calcium score came back over 800, indicating a significant amount of calcified plaque, and subsequent testing revealed an almost complete blockage of his left anterior descending (“widowmaker”) artery.

What is remarkable is that he had absolutely no symptoms—no chest pain or shortness of breath. Without putting those subtle clues together, this would have gone unnoticed. He still calls to say, “You saved my life. Thank you!” That is exactly why this model of medicine matters. It takes time to invest in each patient and be truly proactive, but it saves lives.

Precision medicine in Scottsdale

Many of my patients belong to a very active, aging population, including a large community of “snowbirds”.  For these seasonal patients, I prioritize seamless communication with both them and their other healthcare providers, ensuring a clear continuity-of-care plan before they leave for the summer.

I also care for many healthy, fitness-focused individuals. These patients are deeply invested in their well-being and often highly educated about their health goals. In these cases—and across my entire practice—my role is to stay on the cutting edge of clinical research and help patients fine-tune their current wellness strategies.

I designed my practice to be a comprehensive, “one-stop shop” for your healthcare needs. For your convenience, I handle services like in-house lab draws and treat a wide range of conditions. However, I also know my limitations; if a concern falls outside my scope, I refer it out to the appropriate specialist.. Thanks to my seven years of hospital experience and deep local roots, I maintain a strong network of trusted specialists to ensure you get the exact care you need.

While this proactive, personalized model requires an upfront investment, it is truly an investment in your long-term health. By identifying and addressing potential issues early, we can optimize your day-to-day wellness and help prevent serious, costly medical complications down the road.

What to look for in a precision medicine doctor in Scottsdale

When searching for functional medicine, precision medicine, or a concierge doctor in Scottsdale, you want to ensure you find the right fit. Because local clinic offerings vary widely, it helps to focus on credentials, practice models, and finding a doctor you feel most comfortable with.

I would familiarize yourself with their model of care. There are companies with a large number of concierge physicians who are still seeing hundreds of patients. In my mind, that’s not significantly different from the traditional healthcare system.

You want to know:

  • What’s their panel size/patient volume?
  • What is their policy for same-day or next-day visits?
  • How accessible are they?
  • What is included in the membership?
  • What is their interest or area of expertise?

Most importantly, make sure you have a conversation with the provider, whether it’s over the phone or in the office.

You want to connect with your provider and feel like you’re a good match. Ultimately, you’re building a relationship and investing in them as they invest in you.

Is precision medicine replacing traditional primary care?

Up until the late 1900s, healthcare relied heavily on “intuitive medicine,” where physicians depended on their personal knowledge and experience due to a lack of scientific data. This approach shifted dramatically with the rise of randomized controlled trials and evidence-based data, marking the evolution of traditional medicine. This modern era of care became deeply rooted in population-level statistics and standardized clinical guidelines, which remain foundational to healthcare today.

Rather than replacing traditional care, precision medicine represents the next stage of medical evolution. It enhances existing protocols by allowing providers to take a more in-depth look at the individual patient. By integrating advanced tools like genetic testing and genome-driven data, clinicians can now move away from a one-size-fits-all approach and instead tailor treatments, medications, and therapies to a patient’s unique biological makeup.

Looking ahead, technology and proactive care will further transform this landscape. Artificial intelligence is already playing a pivotal role by offering novel ways to interpret complex data, optimize clinical workflows, and improve patient education. Ultimately, precision medicine supports a broader shift toward a preventative healthcare model, leveraging established data to intervene and protect patient health before more serious issues can develop.

How I build an individual health blueprint

I suggest starting with a pre-enrollment call. This gives us a chance to connect and ensures we are a good fit before you commit to the concierge program. Once you join, our first step is building your personalized health blueprint. Together, we will look at the big picture with a deep dive into your current health, unique lifestyle, family history, and personal goals.

To build an accurate blueprint, we will examine your daily habits, including sleep, stress management, hydration, and alcohol consumption. We will look closely at your nutrition—focusing on protein and fiber intake—and your exercise routine to see how often you are strength training or making time for recovery. Additionally, understanding what health events your family has experienced, such as autoimmune diseases or early heart attacks, provides vital clues for your preventative care.

Biomarkers and advanced lab testing will also guide our strategy. While there are countless evaluations available, many can be costly, so we will carefully tailor your testing to match your specific goals, clinical needs, and budget. To maximize our time together, I send new patients a link to my EMR system before their first visit. By uploading your existing medical records and data, I can spend time before the visit reviewing your history in detail. This thoroughly prepares me before you walk through the door and ensures our in-person time is spent focused entirely on you.
